Final Project Blog Week 8 – Source Documentation

Group Members: Khizar, Reed, Dylan, and Ngelek

The objective of our project is to use Carleton Zoobooks to create a visualization of the demographic breakdown and view the poverty data from each city. Specifically, our group wants to use data to create visuals of the trend between class year and student proportions that come from underserved communities.

Below are the following sources we are interested in using:

Carleton College New Student Zoobooks

Link: Zoobooks

Format: This source has a list of students with their original one-card pictures. It also includes what school they went to. Ideally, we want to take the data from this site and transform it into a CSV file. Our group is only concerned with the hometown of each student, so we play on giving each specific student an ID so they remain anonymous.

Rights: Carleton College owns the New Student Zoobooks and allows currently enrolled Carleton College students to access and use the data. However, the images are not available for reproduction. We were able to find this information from the description available on the site.

Privacy/Ethics: The zoobooks contain the picture and name of each student that enrolled for each specific year. We plan on removing the student name, image, and any personal information in our final CSV file and only include the high school of every student.

Social Explorer

Format: This source has data on the amount of the population that is in poverty for each county. We want to use this data with the data from our Zoobooks so that we can connect each city with the poverty rate of their county.

Rights: Social Explorer owns all intellectual property and allows us to use any data as long as we are not using it for commercial use. This information was available on the Social Explorer terms of service.

Privacy/Ethics: This information is not meant to evoke harm or construct any false narratives about people from these countries.
