The group is going to be Ngelek, Reed, Dylan, Khizar.
Topic
We want to look at the zoobooks and see the demographic breakdown of each student and see the poverty level for each city. We want to then use this data to create visuals of the data and show some sort of trend between class years and students that come from underserved communities.
Objective
We want to use the Carleton Zoobooks and create some interactive graphics that show trends within the demographics of students, where they came from, and some data that shows how students from certain parts of the country have grown or decreased. We want to scrape the data from each Zoobook using AI which can easily break up students by their city, state, and add a poverty level indicator for each city. We want to create these interactive data visualizations using flourish.
Timeline
- Week 1: Scrap data and clean it
- Week 2: Create data visualizations
- Week 3: Clean up data visualizations and create our presentation
DH Precedent
This project was the precedent for our project.
Individual Thoughts
Reed: I wanted to look at the breakdown of information about students and the most powerful data that we thought was available was students cities. I am interested in seeing the trends in how the demographics of each class have changed when looking at the poverty levels of students cities.
Khizar: The mapping poverty project that we looked at was really interesting and definitely had me thinking about how we could map poverty using Carleton student demographics. I am also looking forward to seeing what the data says and how we can effectively present it.
Dylan: I am interested in the trends of Carleton students and I know what my perception is about students and the cities they come from but it would be really interesting to see what the data says.
Ngelek: I thought the mapping poverty project was really insightful and I thought it would be interesting to put our own spin on it but instead visualizing the places students have came from and the communities they’ve grown up in.
Documenting where Carleton students come from is a very good idea! This would allow our college to understand how to accommodate students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Understanding the financial and cultural backgrounds of students could allow for the college to create a more welcoming campus. This could also force people to recognize how wide the financial differences are between students.
Team Zoobooks,
I really like the idea of taking inspiration from mapping poverty and overlaying those data on Carleton hometowns. Several past groups have looked at zoobook data and this project put together a nice map showing change over time with some eras for explanation, but it didn’t get granular. Adding context for this makes a lot of sense.
You might also want to check out Social Explorer which is a nice entry into working with census data.
