Google Sheet Link, Web App Link

ArcGIS online has a lot of capabilities for web mapping. Overall, the process wasn’t difficult and easy to map with a dataset. For stylistic choices, I went with a light grey basemap, as well as complementary colors symbols and polygon features to show contrast. I kept the default label colors to stand out and changed the symbol icon to a pin, demonstrating campus significant locations.

There is a lot of potential for web mapping for DH work in general. By using a data set with the longitude and latitude, the points of interest can be easily mapped onto a basemap. Other attributes can also adjust various qualities like symbol rotation or transparency. Especially with DH mapping that lacks modern evidence, by web mapping and creating polygon features, fields like ancient ruin studies can benefit from web mapping. From a previous class I took, we used ArcGIS for mapping of ancient cities, which made visualization a lot easier on a web map by using 3D models and extrusions.

  1. Hi Cynthia! Your campus map turned out great! I like your decision to change the symbol icon to a pin and also use complimentary colors, they stand out against the grey base map. I agree that web mapping is a great tool for data visualization, and I can imagine its benefits for understanding ancient societies.

  2. I agree, web mapping is such a useful skill to have! The complementary colors really pop against the gray basemap, and the popups are a nice touch—great balance of info without being overwhelming. It’s clear you put a lot of thought into making the map both functional and easy to use!
