Lab #6

When making this map, my goal was to make it as simple and as readable as possible. I chose a base layer that was really simplistic and easy to look at. I initially wanted to use the standard satellite layer, but to me I felt like there was too much going on. When editing the symbology, I put circles on each location where the size and transparency displayed how often I visited that place. The larger and darker circles are my most visited locations while the smaller and more transparent circles are my least visited locations. I also added location pins that are visible from relatively far away. Overall, I feel like this map conveys my most visited locations around campus in a simple but clean manner.

Web mapping could be used to model cultural and historical data. Maps could be made to represent migration patterns, historical landmarks, or archaeological sites. An entire dataset holding entries of various cites, landmarks, etc. could all be visualized on a single interactive map that makes it much easier for anyone to access and use. ArcGIS in particular, I feel, has a very robust selection of features and tools that you can use to build quality maps. Although it does take quite a bit of time to learn the basics, ArcGIS still has massive potential in the DH world. I felt like it fared well with this small-scale project, and I believe that it will also fare well with larger projects.

  1. Hi Shalim, I really like the way you visualize your map. I fully agree that the satellite layer is a bit too noisy, and I like the way you keep everything very simple. I especially like the way you design your points: “larger and darker circles are my most visited locations while the smaller and more transparent circles are my least visited locations”. I didn’t know you can do that with ArcGIS.

  2. I like the way you chose to display ur map. It is cool that no matter how far out you zoom (at least when I view the map) the location pin and the ‘Dormitory’ tag are visible. I think it was a good choice to use this base map instead of the satellite layer.
