Setting up my WordPress site has been an interesting and sometimes challenging experience. So far, I have used the site for a personal introduction, where I share my academic and career goals along with some of my hobbies. Building the site came with some challenges, including getting signed out of my WordPress account and attempting for about an hour to sign back in. One of the most interesting things I could accomplish was using CSS to tweak the layout and make one of the words on the site float on the page. I chose the word “peace” as it connected to the meditation practice I mentioned in my About Me while also giving a way to sign off on the About Me. It took me quite a while to figure out, but I enjoyed how the product came out. I’m excited about the possibilities this platform offers. Beyond just an “about me” page, I see the potential to use it to showcase my future research and possible discoveries. It could serve as a portfolio of my creative or professional works.
When it comes to some of the benefits and drawbacks of having your own WordPress site compared to other services or social media. Control over how you want your information to look is one of the major benefits of hosting your own site. Unlike some other options, you can decide everything from the design to the site’s functions. However, managing the technical side could be time-consuming. It requires some responsibilities if you want to maintain it. The initial setup could also be a little tricky, and really customizing and adding interesting features may take a little bit of expertise. Overall I enjoyed the process of creating the page and it was something I had never attempted to do before. I think that for the future it could possibly be something I look into more.
