I really did not like making the ‘about page’ for this. I do not want to put information about myself out at all and kept the information on the page minimal. There’s not much on the page, but I still feel extremely uncomfortable having even made that much.
While working on it, I downloaded a few themes, but for the initial ones I liked, I was unable to find where to edit and add additional CSS. I later downloaded a different theme and was able to find it. Even though I was able to find where to do it for this one, I don’t think I was successful with what I typed in the panel. I didn’t see the changes I wanted to make reflected on the right-hand side with the preview. I tried searching for tutorials, but I didn’t find any to be helpful. I think it might be that the tutorials I found were incompatible with the style or formatting of the theme I was using. I can try it again at a later date or ask a friend for help.
For me personally, I have no idea what to do with this platform. It makes me uncomfortable more than anything else.
The benefits of hosting my own website would include greater customization and creative control, but it would have the downside of being more work to build and maintain compared to using a company’s service or a social media platform. Where I am, I don’t think it is better for me, or makes sense for me, to use my own site. Due to personal reasons, online spaces make me extremely uncomfortable and I have no need for a blog or a website for personal or professional use. It also requires a lot of skills that I don’t have to run and build. Making my own site would require a lot from me that I’m not entirely able to give while at the same time, I do not need it. For these reasons, I think using a social media platform would be better suited for me.
As someone that has spent a lot of time on the internet throwing their information around and only recently been more cautious of what information they put out, it’s fascinating how you have experienced that for much longer. Specially because I am of the opposite view in terms of which option is better, I think that creating a website takes a lot of time and study, however you get to decide all the information that the site has, unlike social medias in which just to create your account they ask for more information than I would like to give them.
