Source Documentation (Mapping Carleton’s past)

Team members: Peter Qian, Chloe Xufeng, Mark Jiang, Harry Xun

To begin with, we have mainly three types of sources.

  1. 3D model layer, where we do 3D extrusion based on the 3D model layer.
  2. The second type of source is the collection of old photos of the campus building as they used to be.
  3. The third is the collection of photos of what the current campus buildings look like, taken by ourselves.

BBBike Extract provides OpenStreetMap (OSM) data in multiple GIS-compatible formats, such as Shapefiles, GeoJSON, and PBF files. The extracted data can be used in GIS applications, including ArcGIS and QGIS.
  • Rights:
The extracted data is sourced from OpenStreetMap, which is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL). This means users can freely use, modify, and share the data as long as attribution is provided.
  • Privacy/Ethics:
Since OpenStreetMap is crowdsourced, the data could include user-contributed errors or outdated information. Ethical considerations include ensuring data accuracy and avoiding misrepresentation of geographical features. If personal locations or sensitive infrastructure (e.g., government buildings) are included, care should be taken when sharing or visualizing the data.

This interactive map was created from BBBike’s OpenStreetMap data extraction by our professor Austin. The data has been processed and visualized within ArcGIS.

Since this dataset originates from OpenStreetMap, it remains subject to the Open Database License (ODbL). Since we are Carleton students from class DGAH 110, we assume we are allowed to use it.

Privacy/Ethics:
The map likely includes publicly available street and infrastructure data. There were no personally identifiable or sensitive details found after reviewing the map.

Note: Since there are a lot of old photos with the same properties, we will take one as an example here to illustrate.
