Lab Week 9 – Project Data Visualization

For our project we collected photos of historical downtown Northfield and created both 3d models of two of the buildings and colorized all of the photos. Finally we visualized all of the data together using arcGIS. Below is an interactive viewer for one of our 3d models for the project. Specifically this is the old library.

Data: For our project we used a few different sources to get our data all of which involved finding photos. Some of the data was pulled from Carleton’s own archive. This was ideal as all the photos contained meta data regarding the photo. Similarly, we also used St. Olaf’s archive for 2 of our photos. The rest of the sources came from one of two outside sources, the Northfield Historical Society and the Minnesota Historical Archive. With these sources we were able to locate all of our photos for the project.

Tools: To create the data visualization we used resources given by arcGIS. After creating the map layers we were both able to embed the Scene Viewer as well as create experience based Apps to interactively walk the users through the data. The App is what we will use to present our final project. For this blog post I simply embedded the a 3d model viewer which is used by our final arcGIS web viewer. This allows a more exploitative experience with our data. This two different visualizations serve different purposes as the Experience App makes sure the user sees and understands all of the data within context. On the other hand, the Scene Viewer allows the user to explore the data themselves. This creates a more authentic experience with the project but risks the user missing concepts or data.

Styling: For styling the scene itself contains a substantial amount of styling to better display the data for interpret ability and ease of use. Creating the App also contains many style considerations such as photo positioning, ordering, and font styling/coloring. All of these things combine to create a good user experience and easy interpretability. On top of this a considerable amount of time went into creating the 3d models (done by other group members) which brings together the project nicely.

Over all I am excited to show present the full project in class!
