Data Visualization

Data

The data comes from the Carleton Common Data Sets where we extracted only the data on first-year admissions from 1999-00 to 2023-24 and transferred that data onto a Google Sheet. We have data on number of applicants, number of admitted students, number of enrolled students, and acceptance rate.

Tool

We used Flourish to make bar graphs to make trends over time easier to see. We also made a line chart to visualize the acceptance rate over time. We also made pie charts to visualize the exact numbers of applicants and exact number of accepted students.

Data Viz

We are looking for interesting trends in the data and then conducting explanatory research to be able to describe the reasons behind those interesting trends. The graphs are meant to help visualize and make it easier to identify interesting trends.

Style

We changed the colors such that they are easier to see for the viewer. We also chose different colors for different variables. For example, the color for Male Applicants is different than the color for Total Number of Applicants because they convey different things. We also adjusted the background of some graphs so that the colors of the bars are easier to see.
