Team Charter

Values and Goals

Our primary goal for this project is to learn how to effectively create 3D models of historical artifacts with Photogrammetry. More specifically, we want to focus on including small details, texture, and imagery, as the artifacts we are working with are quite old and have some damage. Creating accurate models of the small details will allow for more specific research to be done, and our project will also provide interactive models for objects that previously had only one representative image, if they were photographed at all.

With this project we hope to expand access to historical artifacts, both through interactive models and through providing some basic research on the context and significance of the items. In particular, we aim to increase the visual and written information surrounding Carleton’s collection at the Perlman Museum.

Expectations

Our primary expectations for this group are as follows:

  1. Timely and transparent communication from all group members.
  2. Full completion of assigned tasks, by the set deadline.
  3. Collaboration on tasks.
  4. Enthusiasm for the project and its goals.

Communication

Our primary method of communication will be in a WhatsApp messaging group. This will be used for all communications between the four group members. When communicating with archivists at the Perlman and any other individuals who are necessary for the project, we will use email. All group members will be included on communications, either through direct emails or cc, that are relevant to the project.

Disagreements

Given our shared excitement for this project, we do not anticipate there being major disagreements as we go about our work. That said, if issues do come up, we will first try to resolve them within the group by identifying where the conflict emerged and strategies to eliminate them. If we cannot resolve problems internally, we will reach out to Austin to set up a group meeting, in which we will go over the disagreement and come to a resolution with external mediation.

Responsibilities

The primary tasks that will need to be completed for this project are communications with Perlman staff and other individuals, photographing the objects, producing the 3D models, conducting research on the historical context and significance of the objects, and crafting our online presentation. All group members will be responsible for keeping up with deadlines and monitoring tasks. As of now, the division of individual responsibilities is as follows:

  • Conrado: photography of artifacts; construction of web presentation using HTML.
  • Sam: modeling of artifacts using MetaShape; research on historical context and significance.
  • Simon: photography of artifacts; research on historical context and significance.
  • Joella: modeling of artifacts using MetaShape; research on historical context and significance.

A discussion of our strengths and weaknesses as regarding this project can be found below:

Joella: For this project, my strengths include attention to detail and research experience, as well as some experience with MetaShape that I will be able to apply to my work creating the 3D models and doing some contextual research on the artifacts. As I missed the class when we did the actual photography needed for photogrammetry, that is my main weakness, and something that I hope to grow in as we work on this project.

Sam: My primary strength on this project is doing historical research and having done 3D modeling before on a similar project. I also have some familiarity with the artifacts we are planning to photograph. My weakness is probably that I will want to gather excess amounts of data about the objects. Also I’m not that familiar with the photogrammetry software we plan to use.

Simon: My greatest strengths for this project are my experience with modeling objects both by hand and with software like Metashape, which we plan to use, organizational skills to help with the metadata, and photography experience. I would say my greatest relevant weaknesses are that I don’t have a ton of historical knowledge, especially with ancient Greece, so the iconography on or significance of some of the artifacts may be lost on me.

Conrado: My strengths that are plenty of photography experience in creative, landscape and subject photography. Additionally I bring plenty of coding experience in CS and over the last term I have developed experience in Human Computer Interaction, with a focus on creating websites that are usable by everyone, without the need for disaffordances. My relevant weakness would be a lack of historical knowledge, whilst I might have a certain amount of knowledge of Ancient Greek mythology, I do not have much knowledge on the actual history of Greece.
