Lab 6

Here are links to my spreadsheet, map, web app

For this lab assignment, I created a campus map highlighting five key spots: Musser Hall (dorm), Weitz (acapella practice), Olin Hall (classes, study), LDC (food), and Sayles (study, hangout)

I chose the Navigation base map because I wanted my map to look simple and easily viewable. I adjusted point symbols based on visit frequency where a larger gradient indicated more frequent visits.

I think using ArcGIS provides an interesting way to visualize and format data points on a map. However, I found the platform challenging to use, and I think there could be a more user-friendly tool to achieve similar results. But despite the struggle, I can see the potential of ArcGIS for creating clear and insightful maps in digital humanities work. For example, it could be used to visualize movement or track changes over time. I think digital mapping makes complex information more accessible and interactive, helping people better understand the world around them.

  1. Hi Esther! I like how you used a hotspot/ gradient map to emphasize the number of times you visited each location! Having the number next to the mark is also very helpful. The navigation base map also definitely allowed your map to be easily viewable. And yes, ArcGIS is a very functional and diverse tool, however it is very challenging to get started and understanding all the functions. It seems like when you click open one tool/ function there’s just 10 more underneath- making it extremely easy to get lost in all the different possibilities. I wonder if its possible to create a simplified version of ArcGIS for beginners, then to upgrade to this version. This way beginners can learn the basics before upgrading.

  2. Hi Esther! I love how clearly defined all of your buildings and data are! I like your use of labels to show exactly how many times you visit each place, as it can be confusing to differentiate certain numbers using only graphics. I agree that ArcGIS was tough for me to navigate as a beginner, but it has a lot of potential for users who are more interested in web mapping!
