Here is my Omeka item.
One ethical issue from the combination of artificial intelligence and image manipulation is the illusion it creates about reality. If AI-generated reconstructions of historical events are mistaken for genuine depictions, future generations may learn from a distorted version of the past. This misrepresentation can alter our understanding of history, replacing authentic interpretations with artificially constructed ones.
But this effort to “bring events back to life” routinely mistakes representations for reality.

I also strongly agree that how art is intended offers insight into how people once saw the world. Unlike human scholars, AI lacks the ability to contextualize these insights within cultural and historical frameworks. If we rely too heavily on AI-generated images, we risk losing the nuanced perspectives that traditional art history provides.
At their core, art historians study the ways in which art can offer insights into how people once saw the world. They explore how works of art shaped the worlds in which they were made and would go on to influence future generations. A computer algorithm cannot perform these functions.

I agree with your points. AI-generated images are fascinating, but they can blur the line between reality and reconstruction. If mistaken for authentic depictions, they may distort history and alter how future generations understand the past. While AI can be a useful tool, it lacks the cultural and historical insight that human scholars provide, making careful interpretation essential.
I agree with your point that AI-based image reconstruction and manipulation can start to bend and shape reality in a new way that is not the actual “reality”. AI without human guidance, lacks the ability to apply historical contexts to images. Human guidance can also help ensure a higher level of accuracy in the reproduction of these images.
Hi Jeremy, I agree that AI generated reconstructions being mistaken for genuine images could distort the past in the future. The reason why we recognize various objects and pictures as “vintage” is due to the characteristics we associate the past with. If suddenly all of the black and white pictures become colored, we’ll eventually be unable to differentiate between staged images and real ones.
