Week 3 blog

Choosing how to decorate and layout my website was quite fun, there’s nothing more that I like than a little creativity. The only difficulty I had when creating my website was figuring out how to add css as I couldn’t figure out what tags to use. For example, I tried to change the background color but everything disappeared instead. I did end up successfully changing the alignment of the text throughout the entire website without having to do it manually (one by one) which was rewarding.

My platform would likely serve as a way for me to display my projects with art, the humanities, and computer science. I have always been interested in combining these aspects in forms such as story-telling through games and short-films. Part of the works displayed would be digital humanities projects, primarily to promote other artists from different backgrounds to become involved in the animation and game industries. There is a need for diversity within these industries to properly tell stories that reflect real life culture and identity.

As far as owning my own platform goes- I am quite excited about it. Having my own platform widens the scope of possibilities. I can quite literally do anything -while following Carleton College guidelines that is. The opportunities are endless- something that is not possible with simply having a social media platform. While you are almost guaranteed to reach more people through a social media platform, the options of what you can display and how you display it are quite limited. Users on social media platforms are restricted to what is allowed through the platform’s guidelines. Typically this is for community welfare purposes, though this means companies can also restrict conversations regarding serious matters. For instance, not allowing users to share or post political content without getting banned. With owning a website, these particular restrictions are less severe.

  1. I also had some issues with changing the background color with CSS! I ended up with a really weird effect from the way the CSS coloring overlapped with the theme colors I chose from the site’s menu. It’s really cool that you already have ideas for what you would use your website for outside of this class and plan to make full use of the fewer restrictions that come with owning a site!
