Blog Week 3 – My WordPress Site

The first time I used something like WordPress was back in high school with Google Sites, where I had to make a portfolio site displaying all my projects for an engineering class. WordPress feels like Google Sites on performance-enhancing drugs with all the customization you can do, especially with custom CSS blocks of code. When I was looking at Austin’s site, I noticed how the image in the tab was customized and how the letters started generating into a title on the page. This level of customization was never available on Google Sites, but it’s awesome that it is on WordPress. When I was creating my own WordPress site, I had a lot of trouble navigating the customization menus—not because they were hidden away but because they were extremely laggy and slow. I would sit and wait for certain menus to show up for 3–5 minutes at a time. Despite how the customization dashboard ran, I had a fairly easy time with WordPress, and I was able to explore many of the site’s customization features.

I think I want to use this site to display my projects and achievements that I have accrued during my time at Carleton. It would also be a great place to introduce people to my background and interests. I think a drawback of hosting my own website is the difference in organic traffic I would gain using a social media platform versus hosting my own website. However, I do not think this is a big deal, considering that I want to show this website to a specific group of people and not the whole internet.

  1. Using your site as a portfolio for your projects and achievements sounds like a great idea, especially since you can customize it exactly to your needs. While organic traffic might be lower than on social media, having full control over how you present yourself is a huge advantage. Looking forward to seeing how your site develops!
