Blog Post – Week 3

I have created a new WordPress site that you can access here: Lydia’s Blog.

Overall, the process of setting up my own WordPress install was not too complicated. The directions were straight forward and there are a lot of tutorials around to answer any questions that arose. This was my first time creating and editing a website so I appreciate how user-friendly WordPress is. There were only a couple of aspects that I had trouble with. First, I was unable to change the Configure Location because I had mistakenly created the site before editing the settings. I did manage to go back and change my password and directory but it took some trial and error. The second issue I encountered was changing my site’s design using CSS code. Due to the theme I chose, the CSS editor was difficult to find. Despite those few challenges, I would say that WordPress is very forgiving and easy to use.

What I appreciate the most about WordPress is its user-friendly design. The setup is straightforward and does not require any background in web design. Anyone can create a website in a very short amount of time. I also like how much creative freedom users have. There are thousands of themes available and you can edit every aspect of your site. The one drawback I can imagine is that it may be difficult to gain traction on a WordPress site. Unlike social media where individual pages are easily accessible and recommended to other users, independent sites require promotion.

When thinking about what I might do with this platform, I decided that this site would be great to display my art. Many artists utilize online portfolios to share their work with a larger audience and create a lasting impression. I could create a small gallery and share it with those interested. However, I would like to edit the site to make it more professional beforehand.
