Setting up the site initially was not too difficult at all, and I was able to get all the necessary plugins installed. However, I ran into some unforeseen challenges when customizing my website. I initially edited the website home page to contain all of the “About Me” information, but once I had done that, I saw that in the dashboard, there was a pages tab. I then created an “About Me” page in there, but for some reason you can’t edit the styles of pages like you can edit the blog home page. This meant that I couldn’t use CSS code on the “About Me” page, and the only way I could modify things using CSS on there was to target classes from the blog home page which was really inconvenient and limited what I could do. I honestly felt like making a page from scratch would be easier than using WordPress, but maybe once I familiarize myself more with what WordPress has to offer I’ll find it easier.
Being a CS student, this website could be a great spot to display my portfolio of projects as a sort of “resume.” WordPress has a plethora of features that I could take advantage of to really be creative. I could also use it as a playground to experiment with different layouts for other websites that I may develop in the future.
Some benefits:
- You have full control over what you want on your website and when you want it
- You have an environment where you can test things and experiment with different features
Some drawbacks:
- Maintenance is all on you, having full control means having full control so anything that comes up you have to take care of
- There are monetary costs associated with maintaining a website, and the prices range depending on what you want to use the website for
