Mapping layers (Nina Wakabayashi, Ashley Qian, Huizi Cao)

Our final project, “Mapping Layers: Manchuria and Japan in WWII,” explores Carleton College’s significant yet underutilized collection of Japanese military maps from World War II. These historically valuable maps, captured by Allied forces and distributed to libraries such as Carleton’s Laurence McKinley Gould Library, provide unique insights into the strategic intentions, colonial ambitions, and cultural ideologies of Imperial Japan. Our multilingual team digitized, translated, and analyzed these intricate maps, creating an interactive digital archive accessible to researchers, students, and the public.
