For my first assignment I tried to create my iPad. I played with Fusion in high school but that was a while back so all knowledge I did have about it is gone. To create the shape of the iPad was not to hard it was just a rectangle and I followed the dimensions given by Apple (249mm x 177mm x 5.3mm).

What was challenging was getting the rounded edges of the iPad. I used the fillet feature and that kind of did the job but it still does not look like the natural curve that iPads have. I kept on having trouble figuring out the correct type of fillet to use and how much I wanted to fillet the edges. Another challenge I had with the fillets was with the side buttons. I wanted to get the rounded edges but kept on hitting an error that said that it was unable to filet on those edges. I was not able to figure out how to fillet the buttons correctly so I had to leave them as rectangles which ruins how realistic the iPad looks.

I wish I could have figured out the fillet sooner so I could’ve figured out how to fillet the buttons on the iPad and make it look more realistic. If I had to provide a tip for a new user I would say to play around with all the different functions that Fusion has so that you are comfortable with them so when you are building your object you know what everything does and that there is plenty of online resources to guide you through your challenges. This is was an interesting assignment and it makes me in awe of people who are able to make larger and more realistic objects using Fusion.
Great job, Ngelek. I also struggled with the fillet tool! I agree with your advice about taking advantage of online resources and just trying things out. Your 3D model has great attention to detail from the precise measurements to the accurate buttons. No question that’s an iPad. Through this project I have also grown a greater admiration of people who specialize in 3D modeling and are able to create realistic more elaborate models. It’s impressive and hard work! I’m sure that throughout this course we’ll become more proficient at various digital humanities tools. Go team!
I am really impressed by how you were able to round the edges of your iPad. I think we definitely shared some of the same challenges throughout the lab, specifically the time it took to figure out some of the tools. For my lab, I didn’t incorporate the fillet tool that much, and I think my project could have benefitted from it. Great work!
