For this lab, I decided to model a pair of over-ear headphones. I have always loved both creating and listening to music ever since I was young. I specifically remember receiving my first pair of good-quality headphones for Christmas when I was around 12 years old, which I based the design of my 3D model off of. When creating the model, I did not find the process to be overly difficult. Although the wide range of tools offered in Fusion 360 can be a little intimidating, I found lots of helpful resources online that aided me in creating my model. I would say the most difficult part of the process was creating the bend for the headband. Although modeling the ear pads was relatively simple, when it came time to connect the sides with a headband, I ran into a few difficulties. I ultimately succeeded by using the sketch tool to draw out the curve and the bridge tool to connect the ear pads. I also had some difficulties maneuvering around in the 3D plane, but this became much easier when I started using a mouse. One compromise I had to make in my model was the texture of the headphones. I would have liked to add a leather texture to the ear pads, however, I was finding it difficult to change the texture of only specific parts of the model. I plan to experiment more with this feature so I can implement it into my future models.

I believe that Fusion 360 can be an extremely useful tool in the fields of research and teaching. One specific application I think this would be especially useful for is historical reproduction. Often when we find historical artifacts or landmarks, they have been broken down over time. Fusion 360 could allow us to replicate damaged or missing parts, enabling researchers to create accurate 3D models of these artifacts or structures. These digital replicas could then be used for further research or educational and teaching purposes.

One tip that I would give to other novice Fusion 360 users is to learn the keyboard shortcuts as early as possible. I found that after learning the shortcuts, I was able to edit my model much faster and more efficiently than before. Additionally, I also found that using a mouse was much easier than using the trackpad (especially due to the inverted zoom feature). I encourage others to try this out if they have been having difficulties.

  1. Hi Reed,
I love how you modeled your headphones! I’m impressed by your attention detail such as modeling the tapered headband following the bend. In regards to texturing different parts of your model, I found it easiest to check the faces setting/bubble in the appearance window. This is especially useful when you forget to separate the bodies. Great job keep it up!
