LAB ASSIGNMENT 6: CREATE YOUR OWN CAMPUS MAP

Here is the link to my spreadsheet! Here is a link to my app!

Going through the process of creating the map, I thought a lot about how I wanted to showcase the data shown on my map. I wanted to do some sort of gradient scale corresponding to the frequency of how often I visited a location, but I realized that it was infeasible to do that for only five locations, and it would hold more weight once I got more locations listed. I also think it would be a cooler way to represent locations and the frequency I visit them, with the whole building being on the gradient rather than a point on the map.

I think web mapping in DH is powerful because it makes the works of DH more accessible to the public, and it allows people to see what some DH projects focus on. Seeing something on a map puts it into perspective that some really cool things are happening in your own backyard.

I think ArcGIS is really cool, but I feel like, in a practical sense, all of this could be done within the Google ecosystem. I think it would be cooler if it was within the Google ecosystem because then more people would have access, and people could make their own personal maps and share them with other people. I also feel like Google would be able to make the whole process of this a lot more streamlined than what ArcGIS is right now.

  1. Hi Ngelek, I agree with you that web mapping in DH is powerful as it makes DH more accessible to the public. For instance, web mapping is really useful for using maps in storytelling or demonstrating a narrative. I never heard about the Google ecosystem before, however, I do agree with you that if there is a more streamlined software it may be beneficial to use that for web mapping instead of ArcGIS.
