Lab 3

I created an interactive graph that tracks the popularity of the top 10 most popular baby names in New Zealand from 2001 to 2010. The graph allows you to select different names and view their count throughout these years. I chose to visualize this as it provides an interesting insight into how these names fluctuated in popularity over the decade.

The interactive line graph was chosen for its ability to clearly show trends and changes over time. The dataset covers the years 2001 to 2010, which is a clear time series. The line graph allows viewers to quickly grasp how a name’s popularity has increased or decreased each year, making it easy to spot rising, falling or static trends. The interactivity aspect of the graph allows for users to dive deeper into the data. Each name in the dataset has a different pattern for popularity. When the user chooses a new name, they can see how the graph changes and adjusts. Users are also able to hover over the points on the graphs for each year and see the actual count of the baby names.

To improve the clarity of my visualization, I added axis titles along the X and Y axis. The labels allow the user to understand the data being presented. I also changed the color of the line to a shade I preferred.

Based on Lin’s lecture, she mentioned that we should always remember to try and keep our graphs simple, as a graph that is very complex can be hard to understand. A line graph in particular is extremely simple, but because of its simplicity it is easy to read and understand for all users. My visualization is particularly relevant to Digital Humanities because it not only provides a way to analyze the popularity of baby names over time but also opens a window into cultural and societal trends, particularly those specific to New Zealand. This creates a powerful intersection between technology and the humanities, demonstrating how digital tools can enhance our understanding of cultural and social dynamics, which is what digital humanities is all about!

  1. Hi Sarah! I love the way you chose to visualize the data with an interactive line graph! The interactivity aspect of your visualization definitely kept me engaged and made me consider the the progression of each individual name more closely. Additionally, the graph is very simple and easy to understand. I especially like what you said at the end, this lab assignment is what digital humanities is all about! We are finding that intersection between digital technologies and societal trends.

  2. Hi Sarah, I think your approach is fantastic, especially because your interactive line chart allows users to dive deeper into the data and clearly see how each name’s popularity shifts over time. Everything is so clear and straightforward. I also appreciate your emphasis on how digital tools can enhance our understanding of cultural and social dynamics.
