Check out my website

Overall, creating a static website on WordPress is a lot more beginner friendly than hard coding HTML and CSS. While there is less creative freedom, you’re able to easily achieve the behaviors that would come in handy for a personal website such as hyperlinking text and navigating pages. To people who simply need a platform to display their work or research, using WordPress is a great way to do that as there are several customizable options available.

When I was creating my own website, I ran into some issues when exploring additional ways to add CSS. I had a hard time finding a way to navigate to my other page and change the properties of the image block there, so I stuck with simple adjustments in the header of my main page. In addition, I wasn’t sure how to adjust styles with CSS for hovering texts or images on WordPress. Besides CSS difficulties, I am slightly confused as to where my homepage is located. Through style options, I was able to change the homepage appearance, but I couldn’t find the page at the Dashboard like how I found my About Me page.

Hosting your own website instead of signing up for a service or using a social media platform can come with many financial benefits. Platform fees usually add up when using a service, especially for commercial purposes. A social media platform can come with limitations in terms of platform censorship or algorithmic constraints. However, the drawback that comes from making your own website is exposure. Many platforms, such as Amazon or Etsy, have their own search engine that can direct people to a business hosted on them via keywords. However, if a business creates their own website, they rely on using third party sources to drive traffic. These third parties could include social media platforms, which would require someone to market themselves and grow an audience. At that point, the time investment in creating a website would only be worth it for professional and educational purposes in my opinion.
