Hello all! My experience with setting up the WordPress site was interesting, the actual creation of the site was easy but it was the editing the CSS that was rough, the tutorial on their website was not super helpful because its kind of dated, but I found this tutorial on YouTube that saved the day and allowed me to change my links to green!
As for how this type of platform might be used, I think there are no known limits to what one could do with it, I think the best use cases are as a sort of resume helper (because that is why I have a different website set up for) where you can host all of your different qualifications and experiences with pictures included!
On the other hand it is also a great way to create and promote different projects like the ones we saw last week! The integration with other apps seems really good so it seems like it would be easy for someone to set up a database with lots of data with WordPress!
The only drawback I could think of off hosting something on WordPress vs social media is the reach that the project could have. I think that social media as a whole has created an awesome environment that promotes creative projects like the ones that are sure to come from this class and because our sites are self hosted one would need to appear on a google search for what we create already which is hard to do if we do not already have an audience for it as there could be other more popular sites that do the same.
On the contrary, the benefits are much like the use cases limitless, because its our own website we can kind of do whatever we want with it and we do not have to worry about predatory practices some companies like to engage in, in which for example they might send all of the things you do in their product to an IA to serve as part of the training database. The main benefit for me as well is the learning opportunities! I think that when you have to build something from scratch rather than using what someone else created you grow as a person and as a professional and the value this brings to me is immeasurable!

Thanks for linking that YouTube tutorial! I completely agree with you that social media has greatly changed our method of communication and how we reach/connect with others! I wonder how those of us who want to get more out of our websites after this class can do so with the issue of a minuscule audience.
