Tutorial Blog- Week 9

In this tutorial, I will guide you through displaying images in pop-up boxes in ArcGIS Online. This feature is particularly useful in digital arts and humanities. Photos can serve as a direct reference to whatever is being referenced/ labeled by the pop up box- it makes communication much more concise and convenient. In the realm of mapping where the map can only display a limited amount of information, images can serve as a tool to expand upon what is being described.

This tutorial will work off the basis that you are importing some type of data file into ArcGIS Online. In this tutorial, a CSV file was used.

Here is what your CSV file might look like. Make sure to eliminate any extra spaces in the cell with the image link. You can do this by using the TRIM function. In my file, we will be looking at the “Original” field.
Select “Add Layer from File” and upload your CSV file with the appropriate image link.
Select your uploaded file layer. Then, select the popup feature located in the right bar
Select “Add content.” Choose the “Image” Option.
Click the curly brackets next to the URL line. Alternatively, you can also directly enter your image URL if you’re not uploading a CSV file.
Select the field where your image exists in your CSV file. In this case, we are using the “Original” field.
Your pop-up should now look something like this!

  1. Hi Jennifer! I found your tutorial especially helpful, as my group is currently working with ArcGIS and we were considering incorporating images into our pop-ups. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow, and as you mentioned, maps can only convey so much. This feature seems like a fantastic way to provide a richer, more interactive experience for users. Thanks for sharing this insight!

  2. Hello Jennifer, thank you for this tutorial. I can see myself referring to this if I were to ever use ArcGIS again in the future. This tool would be very useful to enhance the visualization and add more information without using cluttered text. This could also make ArcGIS interactive visualizations more interesting for the person navigating the site.

  3. Hello, Jennifer! Your tutorial was clear and straightforward—I followed your steps and found it very easy to add images to the pop-ups. I particularly liked your suggestion about using the TRIM function to avoid errors with extra spaces in image URLs, as that was something I hadn’t considered before. Displaying images directly in pop-ups definitely enhances map interactions. Thanks for highlighting this useful feature!

  4. Great tutorial! I remember when we first used ArcGis in this class it was my first time using the system and I experienced a lot of challenges. If I ever encounter a time in which I will need to use ArcGis I will come back to this tutorial as having image pop-ups within any mapping process is probably useful.
