Introduction
In this tutorial, I will show you how to easily add textures to your Fusion 360 models using free textures from PolyHaven. I learned this technique while working on my final project, and I thought it would be helpful to share it with others who might also benefit from it. Adding textures to your 3D models helps make them look more realistic by showing how different materials would appear in the final design. This technique can be especially useful in digital arts and humanities, as it allows you to create more accurate prototypes, present ideas in a clearer and more professional way, and build detailed models of real objects with greater ease. By applying textures in this way, you can save a lot of time and energy compared to manually adjusting and refining the look of your models.
Step 1: Downloading Textures from PolyHaven
- Go to PolyHaven.
- On the homepage, click on Textures to browse available materials.

Step 2: Choosing a Texture
- Use the filters on the Left-hand side to select a material type (e.g., wood, metal, fabric).
- Click on the texture you want to use.

Step 3: Downloading and Extracting the Texture Files
- In the download section, select:
- Format: ZIP
- Resolution: 4K (for good quality without excessive file size)
- Once the file is downloaded, extract the ZIP folder.

Step 4: Applying the Texture in Fusion 360
- Open your Fusion 360 model.
- Open the Appearance panel by either:
- Pressing the A key on your keyboard.
- Right-clicking on the part you want to texture and selecting Appearance.
- Apply any default texture (except paint materials) as a base (wood or metal works best).
- Duplicate the applied texture, then right-click on the duplicate and select Edit.
- Click on Advanced, then select the texture file you downloaded. Under the Textures section, choose the file with “diff” in its name.
- Drag and drop the texture onto your model.
Step 5: Rotating the Texture
- Right-click on the texture and select Edit.
- Use the Rotate option to adjust the orientation as needed.
Step 6: Scaling the Texture
- Go to Edit > Advanced and click on the texture image.
- Find the Sample Size field and enter the size you want.
- Click anywhere to see the change.
This tutorial is very useful for anyone using Fusion 360 to create 3d models. I remember when I was creating my 3d model in one of the early labs and there were not a lot of textures to choose from in Fusion 360. If I had this tutorial back then it would have been really helpful to add more details into my design. I will keep this tutorial in mind for potential future use.
I really enjoyed your tutorial for importing custom textures! The default materials in Fusion360 are not the best and they lack variety so learning how to import textures can definitely come in handy for people that want to add more detail to their 3D models. Beyond applying the texture, I also liked how you showed us how to rotate and scale the texture to better fit the size of the model. Good job!
This looks like a super useful and easy process for Fusion360. The videos are super helpful to see how to do each step, thanks for those! I didn’t mess with Fusion360 too much, but I’m more curious now seeing how much control you have over the mapping of the textures. It would be interesting to see how much mileage you can get off of PolyHaven’s textures– and the Armory Building definitely came out really good!
