Project Update

Progress

So far, we have begun designing and drafting our Story map, compiling data on campus buildings, and began georeferencing.

Problems

Some issues we have encountered include, lacking the necessary resources to 3D model buildings. For example, for the music and drama center, there are not a lot of available online resources with blueprints or dimensions that could help us 3D model sides that we don’t have a reference picture for.

Another major issue we ran into was uploading our georeferenced image into ArcGIS Online. We tried using the way we learned in class (via Oldmaps) but had difficulty getting our XYZ link because the site only allows 1 free link. However, everyone in my group already used our free link from doing a homework assignment. After several attempts, we were able to come up with a solution by creating a new gmail account and following the same steps of georeferencing in order to get our XYZ link.

Tools and Techniques

We are utilizing OldMaps Online to georeference and ArcGIS Online to create our interactive map. 3D modeling is done in Fusion 360 and we plan to embed our model in our map. All components will be part of a StoryMap.

Deliverables

Week 8: Finish compiling data on campus locations, begin story map, and start 3D modeling

Week 9: Create Map feature layers in ArcGIS, finish writing and designing story map

Week 10: Final touches and presentation

Given some of our difficulties, we are still on track to finish the project.

Lydia: I have been finishing our CSV file to overlay on our map and be used in the pop ups of the locations. The file will include building name, function, year built, year demolished (if applicable), status, and location.

Sarah: I had difficulties with georeferencing but was able to come up with a solution and successfully georeferenced one map. I have also started adding information about building to our StoryMap.

Cynthia: I have been 3D modeling the music and drama center in Fusion360. I have completed the Music and Drama center model and am working on Henry house. I still have to add in texture and material.

  1. That paywall problem is so annoying, I feel like as students there should be some sort of educational version that we all get that gives us access to these tools for free. I hope that you guys will be able to find more data about the music and drama center, I wonder if the school has that information and if they are willing to share it with you guys.

  2. Hi all, your group is making solid progress despite challenges with georeferencing and 3D modeling. It’s great to see creative problem-solving, like using a new Gmail account for the XYZ link. The integration of ArcGIS, Fusion 360, and StoryMap sounds impressive. Our group also worked on 3D modeling of buildings and encountered similar problems. Hope you all do well on the rest of the project!

  3. It sounds like you all have done a great job problem-solving the various complications as they’ve arisen! I appreciate the creativity and flexibility in making sure that the project’s goals are still achieved, and I understand the difficulties that can come with modeling buildings with little construction information. I’m excited to see where the project goes from here!

  4. I really how well your team adapted despite the problems you have encountered so far. I applaud you guys for your tenacity in creating the 3D models despite not having a lot of data for some buildings. Good models rely on having a lot of solid resources, and I hope that you guys are still able to accomplish what you want despite this challenge. I’m very interested to see how the final product will turn out!

  5. We ran into the same challenge! When trying to create 3D models of buildings on the map, we kept it simple by using the number of floors as a reference. But this made some buildings quite inaccurate—like the chapel, for example. Also, designing the StoryMap has been a bit tricky since it’s not something we covered in class. Figuring out how to structure the slides has definitely required more thought!
