Blog 7 (Final Project Pitch)

Our project team, consisting of Sarah, Lydia, and Cynthia, aims to explore the historical changes to Carleton’s campus, focusing on buildings that have been added or torn down. We plan to create a digital resource that visualizes these changes, highlighting the evolution of campus architecture.

Using data from the Carleton Historical Property page, we will create an interactive web map with ArcGIS to show building locations, along with at least one 3D model to enhance the visualization. Our analysis will examine the patterns of building additions and removals, considering factors like function, time period, and architectural significance.

For presentation, we will create a story map that integrates the web map, allowing users to explore the campus’s evolution over time.

Our timeline:

  • Week 8: Collect data in a Google Sheet (building names, functions, latitudes/longitudes, construction/removal dates) and begin georeferencing and 3D modeling.
  • Week 9: Finalize the web map and 3D models, and assemble the story map with historical context.

We believe this project offers a strong precedent for our work.

Sarah: As a student at Carleton, I’ve witnessed so many changes to the campus in just my three years here—new buildings, updated spaces, and ongoing construction that reshapes the environment. I’m particularly interested in comparing these recent changes with the campus’s past, seeing where certain buildings used to be before I arrived, and understanding how the campus has adapted over time to meet the needs of students and the Carleton community.

Lydia: Out of all of the tools we have learned about in the course, I have enjoyed georeferencing and 3D modeling the most. Both tools make history more accessible, allowing the public to see artifacts or maps that would typically be confined to a physical location. I am looking forward to applying these resources to explore the ways Carleton’s campus has changed over time.

Cynthia: Throughout my 2.5 years at Carleton so far, I have found myself occasionally wondering about what buildings used to occupy various spaces on campus or how alumni experienced Carleton before Anderson was built. Personally, I have really enjoyed the 3D modeling unit as well as the web mapping activity. I would be interested in taking web mapping further and incorporating routes alumni walked through and 3d models of old buildings into an interactive map.

  1. Sarah, Lydia, and Cynthia, really cool proposal for your final project. An ArcGIS web map is a great way to visualize changes made to campus buildings over time in a more accessible way than mere text. I appreciate how, in addition to the functional implications of these changes, you intend to explore their architectural significance and impacts on student life and the Carleton community as a whole. I am excited to see what you come up with!

  2. Team LCS,

This is a strong idea with a lot of potential. There is another group that has proposed something very similar, so definitely coordinate with them to make sure you are doing different things.

There was an exhibition at the Perlman done by an Art History class recently that has a lot of great stories and images, but not organized on a map. They also focused on past use, and I really like the idea of looking at the more recent history of the past few strategic plans to see what has changed in the past decade or two.

This is another former project on “Northfield Gems” that might offer you some ideas on how to combine these themes.
