I found the process of web mapping on ArcGIS to be relatively straightforward for a simple task. However, if one wants to make a more complicated map, with more symbols, layers, or items, I can see how ArcGIS could become much more complicated.
I really contemplated which base map to use due to the locations I had chosen. Three of my locations (Watson, Sayles, and West Gym) appear on all the maps, but on this base map (street view) neither Mai Fete island nor the houses at Lilac Hill appear. The next base map layer I tried was the satellite view as I figured the island would appear. Now I had 4 locations visible on the base map, but the Lilac houses were still not appearing (since they are relatively new).
To compensate for this discrepancy, I created a circle for the island and a square for the Lilac house. I don’t like how these 2 look like regular shapes, while the other 3 share the shape of the actual buildings. I changed the color of the polygons to pop out more and labeled them with the building name, and for the location pins, I set them to change size based on the weekly frequency that I am in the building. The last thing I changed is when the location is clicked, a popup appears. This pop-up contains the name, location, frequency of visits, and purpose.
I see a lot of potential for this tool, for bigger projects that want to map event occurrences at specific locations, or for any other project where one wants to add layers (whether it be historical or modern maps or events) to a modern map.
