Lab Assignment #4

AI has seen extremely fast development, but it’s also raised various ethical concerns. With image manipulation and generation via AI getting better and better, the authenticity of these such images has become a contentious talking point. While I believe that AI tools are really interesting and powerful, when it comes to image manipulation they take away the human experience surrounding art. In How AI is hijacking art history, Sonja Drimmer wrote:

At their core, art historians study the ways in which art can offer insights into how people once saw the world. They explore how works of art shaped the worlds in which they were made and would go on to influence future generations. A computer algorithm cannot perform these functions.

Sonja Drimmer, How AI is hijacking art history

No matter how much you train a computer on how humans behave and interact with the world, it will never be able to fully capture the human experience. The beauty of art is that it is the result of an artist’s experiences: emotional and physical. A computer’s interpretation of a piece is based on being trained on patterns and gathering data from previously generated images.

These recreations don’t teach us anything we didn’t know about the artists and their methods.

Now, while on one hand I do think it’s cool to see an image get generated in the matter of seconds, I don’t think AI should be used for image manipulation and generation. Art is a culmination of human experiences and takes time which is where its beauty lies, and using AI can strip art pieces of this.

  1. Wow Shalim! Thank you for your reflection. I appreciate the connection you make between AI image generation, art, beauty, and the human experience. I agree, what I love about art is that it was made by a human, with their own thoughts, feelings, and way of experiencing the world. Through art, I can get closer at living beyond my own experience and connecting with another person. AI sacrifices that. Also, well done on your quote selection. The passages you chose complement your argument well.
