Setting up my own WordPress website was an interesting and somewhat challenging experience. As someone new to website management, it took some time to navigate the platform and understand its various features. One of the first challenges I faced was figuring out how to activate a theme. The theme I chose relied on widgets, which made it different from the tutorials I followed. This meant I had to explore and experiment on my own, adjusting settings and layouts until I achieved a look and feel that suited me.
Once I got past the initial problems, I found WordPress to be a powerful tool for personal expression and content organization. I plan to use this platform for multiple purposes—posting my own articles for review, sharing my photography, and keeping track of the films and books I’ve recently experienced. Having my own website allows me to present content exactly the way I want it, without being confined by the structure and limitations of social media platforms.
There are definite benefits to hosting my own website instead of using a social media platform. The biggest advantage is customization—every element on my site is something I have personally chosen, making it more streamlined and better suited to my needs. (For example, in my personal website, I added additional CSS to change the font into Baskerville.) It gives me the freedom to organize and display content in a way that reflects my personal style and workflow. Additionally, there’s a sense of ownership that comes with running my own website, knowing that I have full control over what I post and how it appears.
However, there are also some drawbacks. Maintaining a website requires effort. Unlike social media platforms, everything is ready to use. A self-hosted WordPress site needs constant attention, including updates, troubleshooting, and occasional technical maintenance. It’s a bit more complicated than simply posting on Instagram or Twitter, where the infrastructure is already built.
Overall, setting up my WordPress site was a valuable learning experience. It has given me a better understanding of website management and digital content creation. I’m excited to continue exploring its features and making it a personal space.
