Blog 3

Hi guys! This was my first time creating a website on WordPress (or on any platform really). At first, the process felt pretty straightforward since I was just following the step by step instructions of installing WordPress, activating plugins, and setting up the basics. But as I got into customizing the site and formatting pages exactly, how I wanted, I realized it was more challenging than I thought. For example, moving certain components around to fit my desired layout was challenging as sometimes things just did not go where I wanted them to. Despite this, the process was rewarding since I could see my progress in real time.

To get started, I installed a theme called Kadence, which made customizing my page easier. I created an “About” page as the starting point for my site and for some fun, I added a “See My Dogs” page which is basically a page with a picture of my cute dogs.

I believe creating a blog can come with a lot of possibilities. I could:

  • Use it as a personal blog to document my experiences an interests
  • Create an online portfolio to show projects or skills
  • Build a small business website if I ever decide to start selling products or services
  • Share educational content of tutorials.

Some benefits I think can come from hosting my own website is that I can take full control and have ownership of the website. It allows me to design my site exactly how I want and customize every little detail. And unlike social media platforms, I get to own my content entirely. Also, it allows flexibility since the platform can be adapted for multiple purposes. One drawback I recognize is that customizing the site can be tricky for beginners. Similarly, it is also time-consuming as setting up and maintaining the site requires more time and effort than simply using a pre-built platform.
